INTERANNUAL VARIATIONS OF TROPICAL PRECIPITATION PATTERNS by

چکیده

Seasonal and annual precipitation anomalies, normalized with respect to the standard deviations are computed for stations between 30*S and 30N. It is established that the annual anomalies are normally distributed. Spatially averaged anomalies are computed for various regions and their representativeness confirmed. Correlations between the annual average normalized anomalies of the various regions are computed. The results show that simultaneous variations of the zonally oriented circulations of the tropical troposphere occur which are in phase with variations of the Southern Oscillation. The concurrent variations of the intensity of the zonal cells account for most of the observed interannual rainfall variations. Interannual variations in the intensity and position of the meridional Hadley cell seem to play only a minor role. Thesis Supervisor: Reginald E. Newell Title: Professor of Meteorology

North–South Precipitation Patterns in Western North America on Interannual-to-Decadal Timescales

The overall amount of precipitation deposited along the West Coast and western cordillera of North America from 258 to 558N varies from year to year, and superimposed on this domain-average variability are varying north–south contrasts on timescales from at least interannual to interdecadal. In order to better understand the north–south precipitation contrasts, their interannual and decadal var...

Contribution of Tropical Cyclones to the Global Precipitation from Eight Seasons of TRMM Data: Regional, Seasonal, and Interannual Variations

Based on the University of Utah Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation feature (PF) database, tropical cyclone PFs (TCPFs) are identified for over 600 storms that reached tropical storm intensity level or above around the globe during eight TC seasons from the period of 1998–2006. Each TC season includes 6 months yr. Six basins are considered: Atlantic (ATL), east-central Paci...

Seasonal to Interannual Variability of Satellite-Based Precipitation Estimates in the Pacific Ocean Associated with ENSO from 1998 to 2014

Based on a widely used satellite precipitation product (TRMM Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis 3B43), we analyzed the spatiotemporal variability of precipitation over the Pacific Ocean for 1998–2014 at seasonal and interannual timescales, separately, using the conventional empirical orthogonal function (EOF) and investigated the seasonal patterns associated with El Niño–Southern Oscillatio...

Stable isotopes in precipitation recording South American summer monsoon and ENSO variability: observations and model results

The South American Summer Monsoon (SASM) is a prominent feature of summertime climate over South America and has been identified in a number of paleoclimatic records from across the continent, including records based on stable isotopes. The relationship between the stable isotopic composition of precipitation and interannual variations in monsoon strength, however, has received little attention...

Occurrence of Extreme Precipitation Events in California and Relationships with the Madden–Julian Oscillation

California receives most of the annual precipitation during the boreal winter season. Additionally, large spatial and temporal variations in the total rainfall amounts are observed. This study investigates the occurrence of extreme precipitation events in California and the modulation by the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO). Three questions are investigated. 1) Are extreme precipitation events i...
